Description
This episode is such a mess it's amazing...
Cringe inducing audio: Not an issue.
Cringe inducing visuals: It's very hard to watch AJ whipping his poor Sandshrew and bullying his other Pokémon.
Lackluster writing: This episode conveyed its implicit message very badly, which is quite a shame considering that there have been other episodes teaching that Pokémon deserve love and kindness and shouldn't be used as tools for battle.
Annoyance: Not an issue.
Disturbing content(Out of place): Not an issue.
Unnecessary cruelty: AJ is a flat out butthead, treating his Pokémon like garbage, dissing Ash for being kind, and picking on Pikachu(Pikachu himself was even put through humiliating situations and no one much cared.)
Rancid morals: AJ's behavior is seen as being acceptable and he never receives any comeuppance or has a change of heart. Worse still, Brock implies that AJ truly cares about his Pokémon, but this rings very hollow due to the fact that we never see any indication of it; to be fair, AJ did get worried when Sandshrew was missing, but even then it just seemed like he was disappointed that his star battler was gone.
Low production value: Not an issue.
Unfortunate implications: It implies that kindness is, indeed not better than force and that it's not important to treat others with respect and value as long as you get what you want, which is never a good lesson for anyone.
Character derailment: Ash was the only person who saw anything wrong with AJ's behavior; Brock was not only praising AJ's behavior but asking him for advice! This is especially shocking due to the fact that Brock has always been the most sensible member of the group! What the cheese?
(BTW, on a side note regarding this episode, there was an episode of Monster Rancher entitled Eternal Worm which had a similar plot but conveyed its moral much better. I hope to do a 1001 Animations on this episode in the future.)
Pokémon is property of Nintendo.
Monster Rancher is property of Tecmo.
